Camp Kenya is an idea from the Transatlantic Council (TAC) that culminated in a weeklong camp in the lush jungle areas of Kenya. “This was the very first long-term camp in Africa operated by TAC in its 72-year history,” said Tom Jansen, TAC Scout Executive. Held between Christmas and New Year’s Day 2022, campers reveled in once-in-a-lifetime adventures including: kayaking, ziplining over Camp Kenya and the adjacent river, a safari where they witnessed majestic elephants, rhinos, zebras, and more in their native habitat.

During this first-of-its-kind camping experience, 26 Eagle Scouts from countries around the world including: Belgium, Kenya, Italy, Germany, Mozambique, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Zimbabwe, the United Kingdom, and the United States gathered in Sagana, Kenya to form the largest (that we are aware of) Eagle’s Nest on the African continent and documented the historic moment with this fantastic photo. 

There were many noteworthy experiences during the week, but one stands out in Mr. Jansen’s memory, “You may know that Scouting founder Lord Robert Baden Powell and his wife Lady Olave Baden Powell are buried in Nyeri, Kenya. TAC and Kenyan Scouts gathered at the Powell’s final resting spot to honor them. It was an incredibly moving experience to see Scouts representing diverse cultures from around the world gather as one for this service.”
