When Joe Gibson, a longtime Scout leader in the San Angelo, Texas, area died last January, his family thought long and hard about the best way to memorialize his life. Then, it came to them: a scholarship to help send Texas Southwest Council Scouts to Philmont Scout Ranch.
When reviewing applications for the more than 60 college scholarships offered by the National Eagle Scout Association, a clear trend emerged: What consistently tripped up otherwise excellent applications more than anything else was the essay.
More than 5,000 young men and women applied for this year’s scholarships. The funds, totaling $536,000, were recently awarded to 65 Eagle Scouts.
